ABSTRACT
Aim:
To investigate the doxycycline, ofloxacin, and roxithromycin sensitivity of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis that had been detected in urogenital samples between 2004 and 2009.
Materials and Methods:
Vaginal discharge, semen, and urethral samples were studied in the lab with MYCOFAST Screening Evolution 2 and 3 (Signes, France), which is a biochemical-based culture and identification system.
Results:
In this study, microorganisms were found to reproduce either alone or as a duo in 81 patients. U. urealyticum occurred in 53 cases, M. hominis in 8, and in 20 cases, both were seen. Six out of 81 samples (7%) were doxycycline-resistant, 8 (10%) were resistant to ofloxacin, and 12 (15%) were found to be roxithromycin-resistant. Roxithromycin resistance was statistically significantly higher (p<0.007).
Conclusion:
When growing together, the two microorganisms demonstrated higher resistance to all three antibiotics than either of them alone. Due to the difficulties regarding sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in our country (family, peer pressure, feeling shame, etc.), there may be delays in seeing the doctor or patients start using drugs without even seeing one. Behaviors increasing the risk of STD are more common in metropolitan areas. A new approach is needed in STD due to the limited materials in tertiary hospitals in Istanbul.
