ABSTRACT

Epidemiological studies have revealed a higher prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). FMF and ulcerative colitis are two inflammatory disorders and are both characterized by a recurrent attacks, remission and neutrophilic infiltration at the site of injury. The FMF gene (MEFV) encodes a protein, marenostrin or pyrin, expressed in mature granulocytes. Marenostrin probably has an important role in the down regulation of inflammatory response. Inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are frequently associated with MEFV gene mutations. We report a patient who was synchronously diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and FMF.
