Seasonal Variation of Glycemic Control Parameters in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus - Original Article

Objective:

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder treated primarely by changing eating habits and programmed exercise prior to medical interventions. The aim of the study was to estimate seasonal variations of glycemic control parameters which is effected by eating habits and exercise according to climate during the year.

Materials and Methods:

100 (34 M, 66 W) patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes evaluated retrospectivelly. As glycemia control parameters, it is taken fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose and HbA1c values which are delivered from type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients values during december 2002-september 2004 followed every three month periods. Data analyses were performed with EPI INFO 6.04.

Results:

Postprandial blood glucose and HbA1c showed seasonal variation but fasting blood glucose. For postprandial blood glucose and HbA1c most pronounced difference observed between means of September and March (p<0.05). Other than seasonal variation, it is observed progressive improvement for glycemia control parameters during follow up period.

Conclusion:

Progressive improvement for glycemia control parameters during follow up period was the result of patient's accordance with medical interventions. Seasonal variation despite the optimal medication showed that patient's can not accommadate suggestions about eating habits and exercise. So, it should outline the importance of education and primary role life style changings in treatment of diabetes mellitus.
