Etiological Distribution of Ascites Investigated Patients - Original Article

Aim:

The classification of the patients which hospitalized for the investigations of the ascites fluid.

Material and Methods:

The 58 patients hospitalized between 01.01.2004 - 31.12.2004 in Haseki Research and Training Hospital 1. Internal Medicine clinic were examinated prospectively. Clinical examination, paracentesis and abdominal USG were used for the diagnosis of ascites fluid biochemical, microbiological and cytological investigations were performed to the ascites fluid which was obtained with paracentesis. The ascites of patients were classified as portal hypertensive and nonportal hypertensive according to serum and ascites fluid albumin concentration differences.

Consequence:

The most common etiologic factor of the ascites fluid is the liver diseases (41.3%), especially liver cirrhosis in them (31%). The ratio of ascites which depend on heart failure and malignancy increase and the ratio of ascites which depend on tuberculous peritonitis decrease in developed countries.
